The compass directions can be confusing.
In this picture, North is number 3.

Underrail takes place in the titular Underrail, which is a vast system of metro station-states, abandoned underground complexes, natural caverns and tunnels, underground rivers and lakes.

This page contains an overview of some of the major locations in Underrail.

Major Locations

Upper Underrail

The Upper Underrail was the residential zone of the big underground metro system before things went to hell.

Lower Underrail

The Lower Underrail was the industrial/military zone of the big underground metro system before things went to hell.

North and Central Underrail

United Stations territory. Not yet in the game.

Hub — A large settlement probably located in the middle of Central Underrail.

South Underrail

The playable area in Alpha version. Location of the player's home, South Gate Station.

South Gate Station — Also known as SGS, it is the most powerful station around South Underrail.
Junkyard — A crude, lawless settlement formed around a junkyard near Depot A.
Mushroom Cove — A large underground lake where multiple small streams converge to form the Celeritas river.
Silent Isle — An island located somewhere in the waterways between the Hub and the Junkyard.
Celeritas — An underground river leading all the way down to the Deep Caverns.

Deep Caverns

The underworld jungle - a place of grim reputation, source of many legends and superstitions. The deepest reaches of the caverns of Underrail. Home to the Tunnelers.

Tunneler City — Rumored to exist somewhere in the Deeps, at the end of the longest Tunneler tunnel.

Upcoming content

I have a lot more content planned. I don't like to talk numbers because I always plan more than I can complete and then reduce the scope to something (semi-) realistic. But to give you some idea, there will be about 2 more urban locations in the Lower Underrail (where SGS is), about 2-3 urban locations in the Upper Underrail and also a couple of locations in the Deep Caverns; and of course bunch of in between areas, some dungeons, mini-dungeons and other stuff that comes with it.[1]

Secured and secret areas

Underrail rewards exploration and perceptive characters. There are secured and secret areas to be accessed all around. Finding these yields an experience bonus in addition to the loot and other benefits.

Zone Control

ZoneControl.png

All zones in the game can be split into 3 distinct categories of zone control — fully controlled, partially controlled and uncontrolled zones.

The Zone Control Indicator in the upper right corner of game UI indicates how safe it is for the player to mess around with traps (and in the future murdering, etc) and how the controlling factions of the area will react to your shenanigans.

As far as traps are concerned:

  • In fully controlled areas if someone from the controlling faction detects your trap, you'll immediately get in trouble with that faction.
  • In partially controlled areas you'll only get in trouble if someone from the controlling faction sets off your trap.
  • In uncontrolled areas you can set traps as much as you like and if someone happens to set it off and get killed, no one will be able to trace this to you.

One thing to keep in mind though that regardless of the zone control level, if you try placing traps too close to someone, they will take offense, or at least disarm them if they have appropriate skills.
